Why Threads will topple Twitter

The social media world has been ablaze since Meta released Threads a day early (my initial thoughts on Threads can be found here). And while the early days of any social app are a blur of press and user excitement before usually falling off, this time feels different.

I truly believe Twitter has finally met its match. But don’t take my word for it, let’s check out the numbers.

In roughly 20 hours since it launched, Threads has:

  • Over 40,000,000 users have signed up
  • There have been over 95,000,000 posts and 190,000,000 likes (according to The Verge)

So, not only have a massive number of users signed up, but they’re also engaging on the platform. This suggests that Threads is going to have staying power, where many of the other Twitter rivals have not.

That said, Threads still has a long way to go to reach parity with Twitter. Currently the feed is total chaos (Instagram officials have said that will be fixed soon). You cannot delete a Threads account without deleting Instagram, no ability to DM other users, no lists, and a host of other things that many Twitter users do not want to live without.

But Threads is off to a tremendous start. They have proven that tens of millions of people want a Twitter alternative (especially as Twitter continues to meltdown).

With a few tweaks, they are well on their way to toppling Twitter as the new digital town square.
